Temperate Rainforests are very rare!
They exist in these 4 Valleys in Olympic National Park:
*Quinault

What Makes These Rainforests Possible?
*Rain. The park gets 12 to 17 feet of rain a year!
*Moderate Temperatures. It almost never freezes in the winter and almost never gets over 80 in the summer.
*Epiphytes - Plants growing on other plants. Plants like mosses and lichens grown on other plants, like trees.
*Lots of Large Old Trees. Sitka Spruce and Western Hemlock trees can grow up to 250 feet tall and 30 to 60 feet around.
*Nurse Logs. Since there are so many plants on the ground, when seeds germinate, instead of germinating on the ground, they germinate on a fallen log. Then, the roots grow around the log. When the log rots, it looks like the tree is on stilts.
*Dead Wood. Dead wood on the forest floor take s a long time to rot. It provides homes for animals like small mammals, amphibians and plants (like nurse logs).
*Roosevelt Elk. The moderate temperatures all year round, help animals like Roosevelt Elk to survive.
